Body Composition - With Dr. Dan and Lee Labrada

This week Dr. Dan and I are discussing the topic of Body Composition.

A hypocaloric diet is when you eat fewer calories than you burn. This can be achieved by either consuming fewer calories or by increasing your physical activity, which will help burn additional calories.

Studies have shown that the lowest optimal body fat percentage that you can reach by natural methods is between 5.5-6% for men, Women on the other hand have a higher body fat percentage naturally, while some women can be below 10%, for example Olympic gymnasts recent studies of college level female athletes showed body fat % of 12-25%.

Those who are able to or push themselves to go below these body fat percentages often lose some muscle tissue/size along the way. For further reading, here are two studies referenced throughout this video:

Osteoporos Int. 2015 Feb;26(2):749-56. Peak muscle mass in young men and sarcopenia in the ageing male. Frost M, Nielsen TL, Brixen K, Andersen M.

Clin J Sport Med. 1995 Oct;5(4):223-8. Fat-free mass index in users and nonusers of anabolic-androgenic steroids. Kouri EM, Pope HG Jr, Katz DL, Oliva P.
